He was found crying and holding their dead bodies, and was quickly convicted and sentenced to death. From the moment Coffey comes to the prison, Paul feels there is something mysterious about him. To emphasize his size, Paul uses a simile saying the guards “looked like children walking along with a captured bear.” The image conjures up the ridiculousness of children leading a captured bear, illustrating just how big the size difference is.
